Travelers International Hotel Group Inc, owner and operator of the Newport World Resort (NWR) casino complex (pictured) in the Philippine capital of Manila, was "surprisingly strong" in terms of earnings in 2023 as growth in the casino's bulk market segment offset a decline in its VIP business.
It follows the 2023 annual report from its parent company Alliance Global Group Inc., which was filed with the Philippine Stock Exchange this week.
Travelers International's gross gaming revenue (GGR) rose 7.5% to PHP $34.2 billion ($593.7 million) in 2023, a "high." Promotion allowances during the period were down 5.2% year-over-year to PHP $9.7 billion "reflecting the decline in VIP gaming activity."
Travelers International's net gaming revenue for 2023 rose 13.4% year-over-year to 24.5 billion PHP.
The reporting period "showed a higher decline in the public sector, outperforming pre-pandemic 2019 levels," Alliance Global said. Casino trading volumes rose 4% primarily due to increases in non-VIP and slot segments, it added.
Newport World Resort currently has five international hotel brands: Marriott Manila Hotel, Sheraton Manila Hotel, Hilton Manila, Hotel Okura Manila, and Holiday Inn Express Manila.
At the end of 2023, the group's gaming business had 416 VIP and mass gaming tables and 2,068 slot machines.
With the opening of the Grand Club, the company launched an additional VIP gaming area in 2023. The retail store in the Grand Wing area of the complex "will be open soon," and offers a "unique customer experience across a range of gaming and non-gaming amenities," the annual report from parents added.
Travelers International rose 17.3% year-over-year to 31.6 billion PHP, the parent company said. Travelers International's net profit rose 89.2% year-over-year to 1.99 billion PHP.
